Nationals Statement

Nationals WA Candidate for Moore, Shane Love has stated that the development of the unconventional gas industry or fracking should only occur in line with community concern, in particularly those of affected landholders.

Western Australia has enormous potential for onshore gas with production dating back more than 50 years in Western Australia. The Nationals in 2012 responded to community concern about the development of unconventional gas in the region by holding three forums in Eneabba, Dongara and Gingin to allow local residents to raise their concerns and for government bodies and industry to respond.

US attempts to Frack for Gas in Colorado was a disaster for the environment and community.

1969 the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) detonated a 40-kiloton nuclear device 8,426 feet below the ground surface in an attempt to release commercially marketable quantities of natural gas from the fine-grained, low-permeability sandstone of the Williams Fork Formation.

Local activist Trish McAuliffe has had a run-in with the Stirling City Council in Perth's northern suburbs over a banner on her property advertising a public meeting about gas fracking.

McAuliffe is a member of grassroots campaign group No Fracking Way and put up a hand-painted banner on her own property that said “Fracking = pollution”. The sign also gave details for a public meeting organised by the Clean Water Healthy Land alliance featuring a speaker from the Lock the Gate Alliance.

Recently Mines Minister Moore intervened to stifle public debate on Fracking at open forums.

This is a very alarming practice by the Barnett Liberal Government and certainly warrants a high level of scrutiny.

Dr George Crisp was obstructed from attending.

He states 'It is not the place of a government or its ministers to willfully restrict access to relevant information or expert opinion, and intervening in public meetings in this way should indeed be scrutinised by the media.'
