Grain Rail iT Matters

Rail for Grain an issue for Cancer & Health

The rail v truck debate for regional grain must also take into consideration health and cancer issues.

Experts at the World Health Organisation (WHO) state diesel engine exhaust fumes can cause cancer in humans.

WHO have classified diesel engine exhaust as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), based on sufficient evidence that exposure is associated with an increased risk for lung cancer.

Any decision by the WA Liberal government to scrap regional rail should take into consideration the effect on the health of the community of increased diesel trucks on WA roads and the increases in cancer from such a decision.

When releasing the report Dr Christopher Wild, Director, IARC, said that ''while IARC’s remit is to establish the evidence - base for regulatory decisions at national and international level, today’s conclusion sends a strong signal that public health action is warranted.'

The #wa2013vote website will be kept online so politicians promises and statements can be checked until the end of next WA election in 2017, and after.
