Robin Chapple MLC, Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region, and Greens WA spokesperson for Mining matters, today lamented the all-too-predictable outcome of a failed system, whereby the Central Norseman Gold Corporation (in administration) was slapped on the wrist with a paltry $15,000 fine over the tragic death of the late Mr Rene Ponce while working in its OK mine in 2010.

In 2011, the Environment and Public Affairs Committee of which Lynn is a member conducted a 12-month review into shack sites in Western Australia. A full copy of the Committee’s report is available here.

This issue is complex, particularly because the shacks are privately owned structures situated on public land. There are also issues of public amenity, health, heritage, damage to the environment, and risk.

Greens (WA) Water Spokesperson Alison Xamon MLC today released an action plan for reversing the decline of the Swan and Canning rivers due to excessive build-up of nutrients.

"Perth's urban drain network is a major source of the excessive loads of nitrogen and phosphorous entering the Swan-Canning rivers," Ms Xamon said.

The Greens have developed a comprehensive plan to monitor and mitigate the impacts of rising ocean temperatures on the WA marine environment.

Releasing the plan on Cottesloe Beach this morning Greens Senator Rachel Siewert and Greens candidate for North Metro Cameron Poustie said we were already witnessing the impacts of ocean warming and research was urgently needed to keep abreast of the changes.

The Barnett Government must reveal the details of their Federal funding requests in the wake of Troy Buswell’s admission that the Commonwealth will need to pay for more than half of the Liberals’ transport election promises, the Greens said today.

On February 7th Greens Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam attempted to uncover the details of the State’s light rail funding application to Infrastructure Australia, only to be told they were confidential.

The Greens have named and shamed the state’s biggest carbon emitters in a bid to try to tackle WA’s growing reputation as one of the biggest per capita polluters on the planet.

Greens MLC Robin Chapple said Woodside topped the list of the state’s worst greenhouse gas emitters pushing out more than 12M tonnes a year from its Burrup development, the equivalent of the annual combined carbon emissions of around 4 million cars.
