The Greens today called for the Government to take a closer look at worker safety in unconventional gas exploration and for independent oversight of the fracking industry after a fracking company announced to the ASX that it had cancelled its contract with a major fracking rig.

Greens Statement

The long-promised Muja coal-fired power station refurbishment is still incomplete, and Treasury has now revealed that costs have blown out over $100 million.

The original cost of the project was $150, with costs now standing at over $250 million and still rising and no announcement of a completion date.

The Greens WA have hit out at the Government today about the cost blow-out and the unnecessary investment in fossil fuel generators.

Cockburn Cement is the leading supplier of quicklime and cement products in WA. With a total lime production capacity in excess of one million tonnes, the Cockburn Cement plant is the largest lime producer in Australia.

The plant commenced operations in 1951. Since this time, the surrounding areas have been turned into residential developments and residents are being seriously affected by the emissions from the plant.

A move by Greens Senator for WA Scott Ludlam to have the Federal Government disclose Troy Buswell's attempts to secure federal funding for Perth light rail was defeated by Labor and the Coalition in the Senate today.

Senator Ludlam moved to have the documents made public after Mr Buswell refused to commit to building light rail in Perth and refused to reveal costings.  The Federal Government revealed today that the State Government asked that the details of their application be kept secret.

Greens Senator Scott Ludlam has moved to have the Federal Government disclose Troy Buswell's attempts to secure federal funding for light rail in Perth, after the State Transport Minister refused commit to building the system.

Greens (WA) transport spokesperson Lynn MacLaren MLC will move a similar motion in State Parliament when it resumes after the March election.

The Greens are calling for urgent action to protect what is left of Perth’s dwindling wetlands saying not even those listed as internationally significant are getting the protection they need.

The call comes on the eve of World Wetland Day when countries around the globe will commemorate more than 40 years since the signing of the Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian City of Ramsar on February 2, 1971.

The Greens are pushing for an inquiry into the Department of Water following a four-year investigation that found the DOW was failing to protect or even properly monitor groundwater use.

The investigation by the Greens found that more than half of the large water users on the Gnangara Mound were not required to meter their water use despite this being in breach of the DOW’s own policies. Even those who had meters were not being made to report what they took.

The campaign to protect James Price Point has reached a crucial point, with the WA Government recently handing Woodside permission to undertake the final stage of their exploratory drilling program.

This drilling will take part in an area which includes Aboriginal burial grounds – disturbing sites that are sacred to indigenous people. This is despite findings by a previous State Government that these sites must be protected for environmental and cultural heritage reasons.

WA Greens Water Spokesperson Alison Xamon MLC says smart water meters, not more desalination plants, must be amongst the measures to avoid a future water crisis in WA.

Commenting on the latest results of a trial of smart water meters in Kalgoorlie, Ms Xamon said the nearly one billion litre annual water-saving resulting from a $4 million investment in the new technology shows that the household water-use measuring devices are a cheaper option in the long-term than desalination.

The Greens have unveiled a $68 million plan to slash the power bills of some of the state’s poorest families and pensioners while cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 74,000 tonnes a year.

The plan would see 1.5kW solar systems installed on the roofs of every public and community housing dwelling across the state.

Western Australia’s rural communities are essential to our food security, economy, and cultural identity.

The Greens (WA) recognise the important role farmers play and also recognise that many farmers and pastoralists are practising sustainable farming. However, more needs to be done to support their work.

US energy giant Chevron's massive Wheatstone LNG project will not have any carbon emission restrictions after the State Government ignored its own independent advice and removed them.

The move comes after Chevron's claim in July that the Federal Government's carbon tax, which came into effect on July 1, had made the conditions redundant.

Senator Ludlam said the Greens "Convert to Rent" initiative would deliver affordable rental properties at a minimum cost and without adding to urban sprawl.
