WA's health system ailing under Barnett Government

Labor Statement

Colin Barnett's plan to increase funding for medical research will do nothing to ease the immediate pressure on Western Australia's health system, WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said today.

"Mr Barnett's focus on the wrong priorities, like the Elizabeth Quay development and his $27million palace, has come at the expense of the investment needed to ensure Western Australia has a world class health system," Mr McGowan said.

"While Mr Barnett and Treasurer Troy Buswell continue to focus on the inner city, Western Australians are are paying the price with our State's elective surgery waiting lists blowing out by more than 2000 people and a further 24,000 on the waiting list just to see a specialist.

"Mr Barnett's and Mr Buswell's failure to support WA's hardworking nurses and their clear preference for privatised health services are a taste of what Western Australians should expect if the Barnett Government is re-elected on March 9."

Mr McGowan said Mr Barnett has once again failed to outline how the Government will fund the $30million additional financial commitment announced today.

"Only a McGowan Labor Government will make the tough decisions to invest in the world class health services that all Western Australians deserve," he said.
