Whitfield Acts on Housing Problems

Rockingham Independent candidate Matthew Whitfield has acted on Western Australian housing issues.

Whitfield states, 'the fact we have a lot of people living in caravan parks and their cars or hostels, shows that we do have a problem here'

He said average rentals in the Rockingham electorate are $370 per week and the number of people attending the viewings of rental properties is 12.

Whitfield's proposals for Rockingham are:

  • re-zone a section of Old Rockingham , approx 800 properties, from it's current R20 zoning to R40 which would mean these larger blocks owners have the capacity to sub-divide and to sell the blocks to potential home owners.
  • relax the current planning laws to allow for the provision of Granny Flats onto properties in the Rockingham area, as is the case in Fremantle, and to allow the new residency to be used for rental purposes.

Whitfield said, ' these two solutions would go a long way to providing homes to those who need them.'

These proposals of Whitfield's could be extended to other parts of Western Australia, and are at odds with Premier Barnett's assertion WA does not have a housing crisis, which seems out of touch with the reality, and the majority of comments.
