WA Labor to buy 144 new generation rail cars

Labor Statement

A McGowan Government will invest $590million to buy new rail cars and build a train depot for the METRONET network over eight years, WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said today.

Mr McGowan said WA Labor’s plans would see 210 new rail cars enter the system over the next eight years to relieve Perth’s congestion crisis.

“This includes the 144 new generation rail cars plus the current 22 three-car trains which the Barnett Government has belatedly ordered,” Mr McGowan said.

“Poor planning for the future by the Barnett Government has resulted in an overcrowded rail network.

“This overcrowding is the direct result of bad decisions by the Barnett Government in 2008, 2009 and 2010 to reject the advice of the Public Transport Authority that new trains needed to be ordered.

“In the meantime, Perth’s rail network and roads have grown even more congested.

“WA Labor, if elected, will immediately start the process of ordering another 144 railcars to be delivered as part of the METRONET expansion.”

Mr McGowan said the trains would be the start of an ongoing annual order for trains, so Perth never again gets caught without enough trains.

“Over the past eight years, the number of people boarding Perth trains has doubled, from 31.1million to 63million, according to the Public Transport Authority,” he said.

“The new trains will be new generation railcars, with state-of-the art technology and facilities.

“This will include driver-supervised Automatic Train Operation, leading edge brake technology and energy efficient lighting, as well as high-quality air-conditioning and passenger information systems.

“WA Labor will also ensure that all new generation rail cars have high-level security, with CCTVs, and free Wi-Fi services.

“The trains bought for the new Perth Airport rail line will be configured to ensure ample luggage space for travellers.

“Modern train technology means they will be more environmentally friendly, use less power, provide a smoother ride and have lower operating cost.”

Mr McGowan said in tendering for the new rail cars, WA Labor would seek to maximise the participation of Western Australian businesses in the assembly of the railcars.

“These railcars will be the first stage of a permanent, long-term contract for delivery of railcars,” he said.

“WA Labor understands the importance of planning for Perth’s future expansion.

“The Barnett Government had its chance to fix traffic congestion and failed.

“Only a WA Labor Government can be trusted to fix Perth’s traffic congestion crisis.”
