WA Labor to transform AMC into one of Australia’s biggest technology parks

Labor Statement

A McGowan Labor Government will establish the Australian Marine Complex (AMC) Technology Park, one of the biggest technology parks in Australia, WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said today.

Mr McGowan said WA Labor created the AMC in Henderson, which is the base for Australia's biggest marine industry, and is committed to expanding its capacity and capability.

"If Western Australia is to sustain its economic growth and keep creating jobs beyond the mining construction boom, we need to become a smarter, more innovative State," Mr McGowan said.

"WA Labor will remove the barriers to investment and expansion at the Australian Marine Complex to make it one of the biggest industry technology parks in Australia, generating more investment, more business and thousands of jobs.

"By streamlining the approval and investment process, we will set in train a change to the AMC that will create thousands of manufacturing jobs and attract investment in the marine, defence, mining and oil and gas engineering sectors."

Mr McGowan said WA Labor will amend existing legislation to overcome the confusing multi-agency responsibility at the AMC by bringing control of the area and its expansion under the one Government body.

"WA Labor's changes will transform the AMC and surrounding area into one of the nation's biggest industry technology parks," he said.

"We will also expand the boundaries of the AMC.

"These changes will immediately create much needed large lay-down areas for upcoming oil, gas and mining projects, something that cannot be achieved within the confines of the existing AMC.

"This will attract these projects to the AMC, directly leading to more jobs in the fabrication, manufacturing and associated service sectors.

"We need to support innovation hubs, like the AMC, which generate jobs, attract investment and develop our skills base - but are being held back by red tape.

"WA Labor is committed to creating a broader economy which generates jobs in a diverse range of industries.

"WA Labor has better priorities for a better future."
