Making our streets safer: Tackling knife crime

What Labor Will Do

Labor will double the penalties for people who carry dangerous knives:

  • Anyone carrying a prohibited knife will face a maximum six years imprisonment and $72,000 fine
  • Anyone carrying a knife classified as a controlled weapon will face four years imprisonment and a $48,000 fine
  • Anyone carrying a dangerous or offensive weapon in, or within 50m, of a public entertainment venue, or in the company of at least two other people will face six years imprisonment and a $72,000 fine

Labor will buy 1000 metal detectors for all operational police cars to help police better identify knife offenders. This will cost an estimated $355,000.

Labor will introduce a knife amnesty to reduce the number of prohibited and controlled knives on the street.

Labor will create further offences to deal with people carrying knives in any public place without lawful excuse.

The #wa2013vote website will be kept online so politicians promises and statements can be checked until the end of next WA election in 2017, and after.
