More Protection For Public Disclosure

Changes to the Public Interest Disclosure Act in West Australia came into effect on 21 November 2012.

The act is designed to facilitate the disclosure of public interest information, and provides protection for those making such disclosures and those who are the subject of disclosures.

The Act provides a system for the matters disclosed to be investigated and for appropriate action to be taken.

The changes to the Public Disclosure Act are to:

• Expand capacity to make public interest disclosures.
• Enhance protections available for disclosers of public interest information.
• Expressly enable a person to make an anonymous public interest disclosure.
• Allow a public interest disclosure to be made to a journalist under certain conditions.
• Provide another circumstance where the identity of the discloser and the subject of a disclosure can be revealed.
