Liberals Collecting Private Information

WA Liberals recently engaged in a act of collecting peoples personal data in a very underhand manner.

Liberal Postal Vote

The Liberals have put their postal address on the prepaid envelope provided, so all the private and confidential information is being sent the to the WA Liberal Postal Address.

It is not disclosed the information is being sent to the WA Liberals.

Our call to the WA Liberal office was met by a very abrupt person that stated they where not collecting the information. This was a complete nonsense. There claim was just because it was being sent to them does not mean they are collecting the information. They appeared to be very defensive about the fact the information was being sent to them.

Our request as as to why the information being sent to the WA Liberals was met with no answer, and a very arrogant phone manner. Eventually they hung up the phone, with not wanting to explain.

The form also provides the WAEC phone number so a person could easily believe the form was an official one from the Electoral Commission.

Letters sent by candidates to voters stated a Postal Vote Application was included, and in view that the Electoral Commission put out an official Application, voters could easily assume this was the official form in the absence of other clear notification.

There is no disclosure by the WA Liberals as to what is happening with the private and confidential voter information, which includes date of birth, phone and signature.

One would assume that the reason for having the forms sent to their offices is so they can harvest the information do not already hold.

Another important question is what management practices are being put in place for the people handling this confidential data by the WA Liberals.

There is a clear safety risk with this type of information being sent to a body such as theirs, and one clear risk is identity theft.

Privacy laws have been enacted Federally to help protect citizens, however the WA Government has so far failed to enact Privacy Legislation in Western Australia.

The #wa2013vote website will be kept online so politicians promises and statements can be checked until the end of next WA election in 2017, and after.
