Don’t sacrifice Perth light rail to politics

Greens Statement

The Greens light rail proposal adapted by the Western Australian Government should not be sacrificed for 'MetroNet', the Greens warned today.

Greens WA state transport spokesperson Lynn MacLaren said scrapping light rail would waste the planning and design work already done and forgo the city-building potential of electric light rail.

"The project is well into its development and should continue. It offers a genuine strategy to reduce congestion and we should not delay in its implementation with 'MetroNet many years away.

"Light rail and an expanded heavy rail system will happily co-exist. Many cities successfully integrate light and heavy rail systems to best serve residents. The Greens light rail proposal will be up and running as the development for MetroNet gets underway."

Senator for Western Australia Scott Ludlam said playing politics with public transport would waste time and money.

"Light rail advocates worked long and hard to secure Federal funding for Perth light rail - which would be lost if the project is senselessly abandoned. Mr Buswell's implementation is far from perfect, but it can be improved and expanded, and it will work well with an improved heavy rail network. The major parties need to see if they can walk and chew gum at the same time."
