Funding boost for regional swimming pools

Nationals Announcement

State President of The Nationals WA, Colin Holt welcomed today’s announcement that regional swimming pools across the State will receive a funding boost, should The Nationals retain the balance of power at the upcoming election.

Mr Holt said a discussion paper released by The Nationals WA in Kalgoorlie today outlined a plan to provide local governments with up to $30,000 per aquatic centre each year to ensure they are safe, well maintained and accessible to all.

The Community Pool Revitalization grant would assist with the costs of maintaining and upgrading infrastructure, improving pool facilities and purchasing new equipment.

“Public swimming pools provide an important sporting and social outlet for regional communities,” Mr Holt said.

“From hosting school swimming carnivals, to providing welcome relief for families on a hot summer day, they are widely used and are an asset to our regional communities.”

Mr Holt said local governments currently carried the financial burden of ensuring communities have access to public swimming pool facilities.

“This investment reduces the financial burden on local governments and rate payers.”

Mr Holt said local governments could also elect to use the grant to cover the cost of pool entry for children or students participating in in-term swimming lessons.

“Swimming lessons teach our children very important water safety and survival skills, and regional pools can be training grounds for the future Ian Thorpe or Stephanie Rice.”

Mr Holt said regional communities had called for greater investment in regional pools and now, through Royalties for Regions, The Nationals had a plan to deliver.

“The Nationals are the only party that will guarantee the future of Royalties for Regions and make sure important community resources like swimming pools receive the investment they deserve.”

Mr Holt said it was essential that The Nationals WA retain the balance of power at the upcoming State election to ensure Royalties for Regions could continue.
