Candidates graded on Freo high school fixes

via Freo High School Options

Parents' community campaign, High School Options for Fremantle (HSOF) have released its scorecard for the WA state election.

Each of the four main candidates/parties was assessed based on their written answers to five key questions.

HSOF Convenor, Traci Gamblin, said, "Our main aim was to make the serious problems besetting high school education in Fremantle a central feature in the contest for the seat."

"We're very pleased how much attention this issue has drawn, from statewide media to last week's Fremantle candidate's debate and countless door-knocking conversations." "We think the scorecard results will be of great interest to Fremantle families and in many cases will sway their vote. And whoever wins Fremantle and government - the stage is set for the next important phase of the campaign."

The scorecard shows that Greens candidate Andrew Sullivan and Independent Adele Carles support opening John Curtin College of the Arts to more local intake, while the major parties were non-committal. No candidate ruled it out.

Commitment to the long term revitalisation of South Fremantle SHS was endorsed by all candidates except the Liberal party.

WA Labor announced a specific policy to provide the school with a selective program and a science centre.

"This election campaign has helped focus attention on the urgent need for fixes to provide the full range of courses to students who want a public secondary education.

The election has certainly boosted our campaign but the matter is far from solved and parents will still be anxious about what the 2014 school year holds for their children. HSOF will seek an urgent meeting to find solutions as soon as the new ministry is announced.”

The #wa2013vote website will be kept online so politicians promises and statements can be checked until the end of next WA election in 2017, and after.
