FIFO report gives Royalties for Regions the thumbs up

Nationals Statement

Nationals WA president Colin Holt MLC has welcomed the release of a report into fly-in fly-out and drive-in drive-out work practices: Cancer of the Bush or Salvation for our Cities which praises the efforts of Royalties for Regions in reversing the FIFO trend.

Mr Holt said the Federal Regional Australia Committee’s report made a number of recommendations to ensure the future prosperity of resource communities.

In the final report, the Committee unanimously noted the success of Royalties for Regions in providing much needed investment in regional WA and supported the concept of a dividend being returned to resource communities based on evidence of the benefits provided by Royalties for Regions.

“This report recognises the important work Royalties for Regions is doing in creating regional towns where people want to live and work, rather than fly in and out of.”

“Royalties for Regions initiatives such as Pilbara Cities are transforming some of our major resource communities, like Karratha and Port Hedland.

“By creating vibrant, liveable towns we hope thousands of FIFO workers will be reassessing their decision to live away from their families for weeks at a time and instead deciding to call these regional communities home.”

Mr Holt said it was fitting recognition of The Nationals WA Royalties for Regions policy which had delivered significant investment in regional communities since it was introduced in 2008.

“Royalties for Regions has seen more than $6 billion dollars invested in more than 2500 projects across WA,” he said.

Mr Holt said the report highlighted significant issues in the areas of health and housing and both these issues have been directly addressed by Royalties for Regions.

“Royalties for Regions funding has established the Southern Inland Health Initiative, which has injected $565 million in regional health and we have committed to a North West Health Initiative, if we win the balance of power, that will inject more than $150 million in hospitals and health services in northern communities,” he said..

“Housing and providing services was also highlighted and Royalties for Regions programs such as Pilbara Cities and SuperTowns have already been tackling these issues head on.

Mr Holt said Royalties for Regions had ensured Western Australia was a leader in tackling the issues associated with FIFO and DIDO and it was vital the program continued in its current format.

“Only The Nationals WA can guarantee the future of Royalties for Regions,” he said.
