Government fails to deliver report into subcontractors' mess

Labor Announcement Dec 21

The Barnett Government has failed to meet its deadline for the report into the mismanagement of building projects administered by Building Management and Works (BMW), WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said today.

Mr McGowan said the Barnett Government promised it would receive the Small Business Commissioner's report into this disaster today.

"This is yet another clear broken promise,," Mr McGowan said.

"The Premier shut down parliamentary business last week in an attempt to cover up his Government's failures on issues such as this," Mr McGowan said.

"We are now told Cabinet won't make a decision on this until after the March 2013 State election.

"This is a deliberate attempt to hide the issue until after the State election and a slap in the face for our subcontractors.

"This Government failed to protect subcontractors working on government building projects, who are owed millions of dollars for their work.

"It failed the 'due diligence' test when appointing the head contractors to carry out the work.

"The Barnett Government allowed this to happen and it must now come clean with the Western Australian public and finalise this inquiry as a matter of priority."

Mr McGowan said it was in the best interests of the 300 subcontractors to know exactly where they stood and what the Government would do to provide them with assistance and support.

"They took these jobs in good faith on the basis they were State Government managed projects, with a full expectation they would be paid, and that has not happened," he said

"They fulfilled their end of the contract, they delivered these projects.

"A number of subcontractor businesses have gone broke as a result of this mess.

"The Government sat on this without conducting a proper inquiry since December 2010. It could have prevented this from happening if it acted on this two years ago.

"This report must be finalised before the Government goes into caretaker mode.

"It cannot be delayed any further in the hope that the issue will be forgotten.

"Barnett Government has once again failed families and the State's small business community."
