Barnett Failed To Meet Suicide Pledge

Being late is not acceptable when dealing with peoples lives, and this is the Barnett government outcome on suicide prevention.

In 2008 Colin Barnett pledged to spend $13.5m in first two years of office to 'develop and trial statewide a suicide prevention strategy.

Did this happen? The answer in no.

The money was/is to be spent over a four year period now, and the period is 2010-2013.

This was detailed in the Suicide Prevention Strategy 2009-2013 report.

The Barnett government did not confirm the funding until September 2009 when it released a report. The 2008 election was September 6.

Was there a problem with suicides - there must have been and it was known otherwise the funding would not have been announced.

The statistics on suicides deaths have not improved with 2008 being 300 and 2010 being 310.

It is expected that these numbers have increased again, however formal numbers for 2011 and 2012 are not available to us.

The #wa2013vote website will be kept online so politicians promises and statements can be checked until the end of next WA election in 2017, and after.
